Traditions: defined

This is what we call birdseed:

It's a snack mix that consists of cheerios (I used multi-grain), raisins, peanuts and M&M's.

My mom used to make it for every road trip, every camping trip, every going-away-from-home experience.  She had the big golden harvest tupperware canister that housed the taste treat.  I always tried to just eat the M&M's and discard the rest, but she was on to me.  You had to eat the entirity of your birdseed before you could grab another cup full.  Yeah, living was hard then I had to eat raisins.

Naturally, when we plan trips now, birdseed automatically (sometimes without conscious thought) gets added to the list (raisins included).  I even made a g-free version for myself.  After all, it is a tradition.  And what family trip is complete without a little birdseed?

I have gotten into the habit of making Chex mix every time we go on an extended road trip. The kids have evolved from eating only the pretzels to eating the whole cup-full. Traditions are a wonderful thing and will create great memories for our (not-so) little ones.

That's a great idea. I might have to try that for my next trek to Pennsylvania rather than eating a couple of boxes of wheat thins :-)

We always had this too! But we call it "gorp" and I'm not sure why...seems a little strange...

okay, so I got a little curious and looked it up. On Wikipedia (although I'm sure there are more accurate sites, this will do for this purpose) it says the following:

The word gorp, an alternative name for trail mix, may stand for "good old raisins and peanuts",[7] "granola, oats, raisins, and peanuts", or "gobs of raw protein". These are all probably backronyms or folk etymology. The Oxford English Dictionary cites a 1913 reference to the verb gorp, meaning "to eat greedily".

Kinda funny. Now I know :)
